What is a flake floor?

A flake floor starts like any coating: grinding, crack repair, and a base coat. While the base is wet, we throw colored vinyl chips across the whole floor until no base color shows. Once it cures we scrape off loose chips and seal everything under a clear topcoat. The result looks like terrazzo or granite and has a slight texture underfoot.

For the steps we follow before the flake goes down, see our full garage coating process.

Why do people pick flake?

  • It hides dirt. Mixed colors hide dust, leaves, and small stains between cleanings.
  • It adds grip. The texture is less slippery than a smooth gloss coat.
  • It hides slab flaws. Patched cracks and uneven spots blend in.
  • It is tough. The full broadcast adds thickness to the system.

Plenty of garages here double as home gyms, laundry rooms, and storage for coolers, bikes, and holiday decorations.

How do you choose a flake blend?

We bring sample boards so you can see blends in your own light. Grey and black blends hide the most dirt. Tan and brown blends go well with stucco homes. Chip size matters too: smaller chips look finer, and larger chips look bolder. If you want a smooth, swirled look instead, consider a seamless marbled look instead.

Epoxy flake FAQs

Is a partial broadcast cheaper?

A light scatter of chips uses less material, but most people prefer a full broadcast because it hides more and adds thickness.

Can flake go in a laundry room or patio?

Indoors, yes. Outdoors, we use a UV-stable topcoat so the floor does not yellow in the sun.

How do I clean it?

Sweep or blow it off, then mop with warm water and a mild cleaner. Avoid harsh acids.
